Ensuring your kitchen and bathroom sinks are compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is critical for your business when building a home where accessibility is critical.
In this article, you’ll learn about ADA compliance codes for kitchen and bathroom sinks. And, we’ll show you how to get products that will last a lifetime.
What does the ADA have to say about sinks?
The ADA guidelines for sink specifications are very clear. The following rules apply to kitchen sinks and bathroom sinks
- Your sink must be installed no more than 34 inches above the floor
- There must be a 27 x 30 inch knee clearance under the sink
- Must have a knee depth of 11-25 inches below the sink
- The floor space under the sink must be clear and unobstructed
- The pipes under the sink must be insulated

Why are ADA guidelines important?
You may want to know how these guidelines can help people with limited mobility use the sink.
The guidelines ensure that the sink space is accessible to those using wheelchairs. Height and clearance specifications provide enough room for wheelchairs to move under the sink and enough room for users to reach the basin and faucet.
Insulated tubing prevents users from scalding or getting wet during use.
These guidelines are also important for your business. The ADA requires all businesses, even small ones, to maintain compliant facilities. Businesses found to be non-compliant may face fines for not hosting all guests.
Don’t forget the faucets
Don’t forget, faucets also need to comply with ADA rules. If you don’t, your entire bathroom or kitchen will be out of compliance.
Here’s what you need to know.
- Faucets must be operable by touch, electronic sensors, levers or buttons
- The faucet must be accessible with one hand
- The faucet should be easy to open (by applying 5 pounds of force or less)
- If the depth of the sink space is 20 inches or less, the faucet should be installed no higher than 48 inches above the floor
- If the depth of the sink space is 20-25 inches, the installation height of the faucet must not exceed 44 inches above the floor
